Come Celebrate Our Birthday

Come celebrate the vibe you've helped us create!

We embarked on our Soundscapes odyssey at Blu Jaz over a year ago, so on Saturday 8th May we're celebrating in style and throwing the mother of all Birthday Parties!

Spinning alongside residents Clark & Raeburn J is our great friend and long time collaborator Reiki (Breakin Asia) she was there when we started so its fantastic to welcome her back!

From a familiar face to a new one Justin Jh (Coup) joins us for his Soundscapes debut, no stranger to Blu Jaz it's a pleasure to have him on board.

Lastly and without question by no means least we're once again privileged to have X'ho back amongst us. Musician, producer, poet and host of Lush FM's Clubscape this man is without doubt a custodian of Singapore's electronic scene.

With five DJs we realize we need more space so May's Soundscape will be spread over two floors at 'Space' & 'Lounge', plus we're kicking off early 8pm to be precise.

Sticking to the Soundscapes formula we'll essentially start off chilled, sophisticated and relaxed before pushing the tempo and ending up in a hot, trashy, fever-pitched mess.

And oh yes, there will be cake!

Future Music at House on Dempsey is all about taking emerging cuts from across the scene and combining them into a tripped out electronic montage so you can kick back and get down.

Like all good quests we start with a plan; the coolest acid jazz, the hottest electro and most advanced techno. But no one can really predict what's going to happen.

Get primed and amped for this House.

As mad as a March hare, follow the line and step into 'Future Music'. Last month's explosive debut nearly blew the roof off, literally.

Mixing in front of a big flashing light box with the word 'camp' blinking on and off does freaky things to my mind.

So grab a cocktail, hang with friends on the balcony and take in some of Singapore's rain-forest. Early is mellow, acid jazz n trip hop.

Go with the flow, as the heat of day is replaced by the thrill of night. The tempo will build, electro beats, house n disco loops to get the feet tapping, then once you're cooking its trippy techno all the way.

Or something like that.

I make it up as I go long, in case you'd not noticed, even taking detours to drop in the 'odd' request in return for a glass of red.

Its been a hectic few weeks, apologies for the hiatus.

Resting over CNY then back at it down Blu Jaz way on Saturday 27th February, another topographic expedition to that mysterious, twilight frontier where acid meets jazz they marry, buy a shack and spawn a funky tech-house lovechild.

As was the past so is the future this month’s Soundscapes is up on the 2nd level where Raeburn J will stimulate your senses from 9pm prior to me bashing you’re lobes in from 11(ish)

Donate to Haiti

During Saturday's Lush FM set with X'Ho I mentioned that I'm donating all my fees from this Friday's (29/1) Future Music gig at House on Dempsey to the folks in Haiti.

In addition House are now giving 30% of all the night’s sales on Granite Merlot (by glass and bottle) to the fund.

What a night! The 44Beatz Halloween special went off like a monkey with a rocket launcher. Message to self 'Vodka dancing hurts head'.

Assembling the evidence now. If you have pictures of last nights Blu Jaz shenanigans feel free to share em. From the boots to the wigs to the masks and the wings. Well I think thats what I saw. Was there someone selling cheese? I need sleep.

For August only we're breaking from the normal pattern (if you can call anything we do normal) of the 2nd Saturday of the month and moving our gig at Blu Jaz to Saturday 29th August instead.

We’ll then be back down Blu Jaz way on Saturday 8th September and 2nd Saturdays from there to eternity. Or, at least the next time I double book myself and Belinda lets me off lightly in return for copious amounts of booze and penance with drums.

So make a date for August 29th, it’s a Saturday!

We’re planning to keep with the Acid Jazz base, throw over a marinade of deep, funky slices. Pepper liberally with Techouse and Detroit techno then finish off with Electro, Drum n Bass garnish.

Know this - it’s gonna be one hell of freaky pizza!

Saturday 13th June

Soundscapes by 44Beatz, a monthly happening at Blu Jaz on Bali Lane, Singapore. We play an ever changing eclectic mix, often starting with jazz infused, funky house and electronica then moving into deeper, hi-tech territory.

We drop our first tracks at 9pm and keep spinning until 3am. Dishing up sounds that make it easy for people to coalesce, get on the floor or just bob their heads and let their minds wonder to a place were music is the answer and all tribes speak the same tongue. 44Beatz presents Soundscapes, offers a relaxed vibe with no cover charge.

We're just under a week away from this months Soundscapes at Blu Jaz so thought I'd post up a note and let everyone know more details of whats cooking in 44's kitchen.

We''ll be starting off early, 8pm to be precise when Raeburn J will kick things of with funky, soul fueled acid Jaz n no doubt slices from the deeper side plus a few surprises along the way.

Around 10ish I'll switch in with some jaz influenced tech house n detroit techno. Building things up nicely for Chris Ho (aka X'Ho) to take control at midnight.

Soundscapes is all about that 'eclectic backdrop' and nobody does eclectic quite like Chris. There's a story I'm told that the 3rd Floor of Blu Jaz is often referred to as 'The Church'. A catalogue spanning three decades, accolades from a around the globe. Recording artist, poet, journalist and DJ, with Chris in the house - let the lesson commence!

How to follow?

We'll do our best. Raeburn J n I will keep the decks spinning from 2 til the proverbial cows come home with fused, back to back mind trickery and sonic soul.

Great news, Raeburn J is joining me on the decks next Saturday. Infamous for his deep and jazzy style (not to mention live didgeridoo and percussion playing) Raeburn’s the perfect addition to the Soundscapes line up.

He’ll be taking to the decks 9pm for what promises to be one 'very groovy salad' of a set, don’t forget your tongs!

Do we need labels?

Back from my travels and back at Blu Jaz on Saturday 11th April.

There seems to be a lot of pressure these days to stick a label on everything and pigeon hole your playlist under one of a myriad of ever changing sub genres and catch phrases.

As a reference point I've stuck deep, funky, tech house all over this months flyer. I feel it gives a flavor of what I'm planning.

You'll definately hear tracks from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Slam, Layo & Bushwacka, Robert Hood, Carl Craig and Mr.G.

Given the venue I'll continue to introduce jazz and soul fueled tunes into the set. We'll see how it goes and what the people on the floor enjoy the most. Thats the thing with the whole Soundscapes theme it keeps moving. Evolving.

Hi Folks,

We’re back at Blu Jaz on Saturday 14th March for another installment of Soundscapes and this time around we’ll be on the 2nd floor so not too many stairs. Why we didn’t play that one while I was on crutches I’ll never know.

To kick things off I’ll be spinning some Acid Jazz, before easing into some nice Tech House, building things up a little and handing the controls over to my partner in crime for the night Reiki. From there on in things should really heat up as Reiki primes the floor with Fidget House and Electro.

Its sure to be another fantastic night – hope you can make it.

Hi Folks,

A few years ago, I was traveling and ended up in the main square of Marrakesh. It was an awesome experience, people just rocked up and jammed; the music had real spirit, there were folks dancing and friends sharing stories. A real melting pot.

I've always fancied the idea of putting together some parties that captured that feel. Creating an eclectic soundscape, a backdrop for people to come together and not only share a vibe but help shape its future direction.

A challenge has always been finding a venue that not only had the right feel but also a similar vision.

Good news. We've found one, Saturday 17th January see you there.
